Early 19th century mahogany three seater settee.

Dates: 1800-1830.

Description / Expertise:

This handsome settee is in rare original condition retaining all the original timber and horsehair stuffings. The form is bold and fluid and the carved ornament very well executed. The carpenter has used veneers with exceptional graining which are a feature of this settee. It has been re-upholstered in horsehair. It is very sturdy and suitable for everyday use.

The shaped back with a section of mahogany above three upholstered sections of horsehair. The original framework has been reinforced, probably in the early 20th century with wooden framework and metal braces. The striking scroll arms with circular ends with central carved rosettes surrounded by a carved ring and an outer deep gadroon carved ring on the exterior. The ends shaped and sitting on a deep frieze on stylised feet. The seat upholstered in three sections of horsehair with two loose bolsters, retaining the original wooden slats. The mahogany with exceptional figuring. Original colour and patina.

This piece does not require a Cites certificate, it is not made from Swietenia humilis.
