Early 19th Century Irish Mahogany Peat Bucket.

IRELAND, CIRCA 1800.

The bucket with ribbed staves and brass coopering with double line decoration. Replacement brass liner.

Peat was the main heating fuel in Ireland in the 1800s due to the dearth of natural timber and the cost of coal which had to be imported from England and Scotland.

Buckets with ribbed decoration to the body are particularly common in Ireland. The Knight of Glin and James Peill illustrate examples of peat buckets which are comparable to this one in Irish Furniture, Yale University Press, 2007 (p. 257 fig. 212). The example has a similarly ribbed pattern and dates from the late 18th or early 19th century, with line decoration to the brass banding.
