Donald Wood (1859-1953) was a British painter of horses, dogs, sporting scenes and landscapes. He entered the painting "Jodhpur Ponies Ready for the Second Chukker" to the 1932 Los Angeles Art Competition. His obituary in The Times made particular mention of "Luxembourg Gardens" and "A la Crémerie, Rassay". Wood exhibited work in London and the provinces and his paintings are now in good collections throughout the world.

The present painting "Fourgon de Ravitaillement" shows a horse drawn Field Ambulance used for carrying Stretcher Bearers and medical supplies. It is signed lower right and dated 1919 and is inscribed on the back with title "Fourgon de Ravitaillement". "Du G.B.D. (Groupe des Brancardiers) (Stretcher Bearers)"  and "Pont de Suisse Sept 1917". Painted June 1919. It is framed giving an overall size of about 10"x 14".

A fascinating little painting and an important record from this period of history.
