Dark Wood Sashi Netsuke in the Form of an Aubergine, Attributed to Kaigyokusai Masatsugu (Osaka 1813-92).

The wood probably kurogaki (persimmon).

Information:

Subjects other than animals in Kaigyokusai’s œuvre are relatively rare. Fuld lists only 24 objects and 73 plants, as opposed to 559 animals. Aubergines seem to figure amongst his favourite vegetables, with Fuld listing 18, 16 in wood, 2 in umimatsu. We currently have an unsigned example on our website (MR3425).
