Danckerts’ Map of Africa.
Copper engraving, 50 x 58 cm, original hand-colour, closed split at foot of centrefold, blank verso.
Danckerts’ map of Africa follows Frederick de Wit’s model, and it is a typical late seventeenth-century European perception of the continent: good coastal detail together with a great deal of speculation about the interior, including the mythical twin lakes of Zaire and Zaflan, and the mythical Saharan branch of the Nile.
