Early 20th Century Arts & Crafts Cuenca Carpet.
3.90 x 3.44 metres.
Spanish carpets such as this one represent some of the most highly prized and time-honoured European weavings, tracing their lineage back to the period in which much of Spain was part of the Islamic world. Early pieces are widely sought after by collectors, and both 19th and 20th century examples make excellent decorative rugs.
An attractive Cuenca carpet, dating to the 1930s, inspired by earlier Arts and Crafts weavings of the 19th Century, featuring a balanced palette in well-aged vegetable-dyed colours, with a design of scrolling floral motifs, in tones of olive green and ivory over a warm terracotta ground, framed by a tasteful border of generous proportions, all in lustrous high quality wool.
Retaining its original outer borders on all sides, this piece is in very good condition for everyday use, and would make a worthy addition to any setting. Rare in this square format.
