Founder member and Secretary of the Staithes Group of Artists he was one of the inspirations behind the creation of the Staithes Art Club.
He was the grand son of Clarkson Stanfield R. A. and studied at South Kensington School of Art and under Hubert Vos in London and Van Hove in Bruges. In 1896 he visited the Yorkshire coast to paint for the first time and in 1902 made his home in Whitby and had a studio in Staithes. He was especially good at depicting Yorkshire Cobbles. He exhibited, not only with the Staithes group and with the Union of Yorkshire Artists but also on a national basis at the Royal Academy and with the Royal society of British Artists. He also worked as an occasional illustrator for the periodical Motor Boat and Yachting.
