The set of crisp relief molded plates made by James & Ralph Clews is molded with the double-headed eagle of Russia.  The V & A have a dish from the same service and suggest that the double-headed eagle probably alludes to the Turkish-Russian war of 1828 and the Peace of Adrianople in 1829.  This war was fought between the Ottoman Empire and the Russian Empire, and it resulted in the Russian Empire gaining control of a number of territories from the Ottoman Empire. The Peace of Adrianople was the peace treaty that ended the war.  Around the rim are molded flowers and there is a band of chain around the top edge of the central well.

J & R clews styled themselves 'Potters to her Imperial Majesty, the Empress of all the Russians'.

Dimensions: 9 inch diameter x 1 inch height

Condition: the plates are very crisply molded. Of the eight plates four have small glaze loss to the right eagle's wing from stacking over time- see the last photos.

James Clews and his brother Ralph operated the Cobridge works at Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire from 1819 until 1834. They concentrated on exporting blue-and-white china for the American market. By 1811 James Clews was acting as clerk to the potter Andrew Stevenson, and he and Ralph were in business on their own account by the autumn of 18132. The partnership did not start until 1815 under the style R & J Clews.
