China
Circa 1700
An early view of the foreign ‘factories’ at Canton, modern day Guangzhou. It depicts the Danish, Bourbon French, Imperial Austrian, Swedish, British and Dutch flags.
The porch supports of the British factory (British East India Company) are still slender columns and not the enclosed arches with columns of the 1780’s.

A similar view from the collection of the Peabody Museum, Salem is illustrated by Carl L. Crossman, The Decorative Arts of the China Trade, Woodbridge, 1991, page 423. E.1.
