Chinese sancai three-colour and blue glazed pottery jar, guan, with short flared rim and broad baluster body, covered overall in a rich blue, amber and cream glaze falling short of the buff-coloured foot.

3 5/8 inches, 9.3 cm high.

Tang dynasty, 8th century.

  • Sold by Sotheby’s London in their auction of Important Chinese Art, 4th November 2020, lot 213.
  • A similar larger jar is illustrated by John Ayers in Chinese Ceramics in the Baur Collection, Geneva, Volume I, 2 (A2), p. 38; another related green splashed jar with blue, amber and cream glaze is included by Regina Krahl in Chinese Ceramics from the Meiyintang Collection, Volume Three (I), no. 1298, p. 274; another blue-ground small splashed vase with different shape to the neck is illustrated by Li Huibing in Porcelain of the Jin and Tang Dynasties, The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, Beijing, no. 209, p. 228, where the author notes that the blue glaze on this type of vase is very rare.
  • A similarly splashed larger jar formerly in the Toguri Museum of Art, Tokyo, was sold by Sotheby’s London in their auction of Fine Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art, 9th June 2004 lot 71, and sold again by Poly Auction Hong Kong in Tang Sancai Ceramics from the Ten-views Lingbi Rock Retreat Collection, 14th July 2022, lot 3224.
  • The dating of this jar is consistent with the result of a thermoluminescence test, Oxford Authentication, no. C112a44.
