A CHINESE GILT AND BLACK LACQUER CIRCULAR BIRDCAGE TRIPOD TABLE.

Probably Canton, circa 1800.

Diameter 36” (92 cm ) height 31” (79cm).

This displays lacquer work at its finest in intricate detail. No time has been spared in decorating the entire table.

The top has a central circular panel depicting processions, gatherings and ceremonial occasions among palaces, pagodas and pavilions in a mountainous, wooded landscape with riverboats.

The eight surrounding cartouches depicting similar scenes among pavilions in river garden landscapes. These cartouches are surrounded by fantastical animals and birds including phoenix, dogs of Foo, deer and dragons among treasures. The feathered outer band leads to a curved edge decorated in continuous scrolling foliage.

The revolving top with a birdcage action supported on a carved, turned, fluted and beaded column with magnificent down curving legs in the form of beautifully carved dragons with red tongues.
