Chinese Famille Verte dish.

Kangxi period (1662-1722).

Decorated in enamels with an array of scholarly antiques including books, a ruyi-head sceptre, a ping vase with coral and feathers, tripods in the form of ancient bronze ritual vessels, an incense burner, a bird in a cage and a painted screen.

The rim with four cartouches containing beribboned babao, or ‘precious things’ against a floral cell pattern ground. The hundred antiques are a collection of symbolic items combining scholarly objects with auspicious Buddhist emblems.

The motif became popular in ceramic and textile design from the beginning of the Kangxi period due to its connotations with the gentleman collector, good taste and learning.
