Chinese famille rose plate.
Qianlong period (1736-95).
Decorated to the central roundel with a scene of cherry pickers. A gentleman on a ladder passes down cherries to two women on the ground, one collecting the fruit in her dress, the other reclining on the ground with a basket and dogs.
The rim with a rope twist design.
The design on this plate is taken from a painting called The Cherry Pickers by the French artist Antoine Baudouin (1723-1769).
The painting was later reproduced in an engraving by Nicolas Ponce (1746-1769), which popularised the design and led to its appearance on Chinese porcelain for export to Europe.
The V & A collection contains two Iranian ceramics of the same design, only with pomegranates replacing cherries. Thereby demonstrating the popularity and widespread adoption of the source (accession nos. 980-1876 / 1768A-1876)
