Chinese Export Reverse Painted Glass Picture.

Greuze’s Young Girl Crying Over Her Dead Bird, painted in 1759, inspired a spate of similar works from English print publishers during the last quarter of that century, including the source for this image; "Betsy in Trouble".

The original work "Painted by J. Russell" and "Engraved by N. Schiavonetti junior" was published by Luigi Schiavonetti in 1797; an example of which is held in the collection of the British Museum, No.1917,1208.3274.

This painting is of Chinese export origin, the design being reverse painted onto glass, retaining its original black laquer frame with a gilded sight and a running husk detail.

Chinese circa 1800.

13 5/8 in x 17 3/8 in.
