Chinese Export Porcelain Famille Rose Dish with Boy on Water Buffalo,
Circa 1735-50.

Fine large shaped famille rose dish depicting a boy on a water buffalo within a Chinese landscape with geese and butterflies to one side.  A foliate-vine border on the border.

Dimensions: 14 3/4 inches wide x 11 1/4 inches x 1 1/4 inches high. ( 37.47 cm wide x 28.58 cm deep)

The motif of a youth herding a water buffalo alludes to a famous eleventh- to the twelfth-century cycle of parables known as the Ten Oxherding Songs. In this cycle, actions such as looking for an ox and herding it represents some of the steps in the quest for enlightenment.
