Chinese Export Porcelain Armorial Tankard, Mosey with Pulleyne in Prentice.

Circa 1755.

The Chinese Export Tankard unusually painted with both a large armorial and a large crest below the gilt chain band around the rim.

Large "famille rose" sprays of flowers are painted to each side. The loop handle with loses to each side from firing now invisibly repaired.

Reference: Chinese Export Porcelain, Volume I, David Sanctuary Howard, Page 549, (Q4). The arms are discussed as follows.

The arms are of Mosley, Sable a chevron between three pickaxes argent; crest- An eagle displayed ermine; in prentice Pulleyne, correctly blazoned Azure on a bend cotised argent three escallopes gules, a chief or charged with as many martlets of the field quartering Argent a chevron (?engrailed) between three mullets sable.

The family of Mosley came from Houghend in Lancaster and three members of it were created Baronets in 1640, 1720 and 1781- the first two titles having expired and the last being held today by Sir Oswald Mosley, bearing these arms.

Of the cadet branch, the Revd. Thomas Mosley, Vicar of Wigginton in Yorkshire, married on 6th March 1752 Frances, heir of Thomas Pulleyne of Burley Hall in York. He died in April 1784.
