A CHINESE EXPORT PARCEL-GILT AND BLACK LACQUER TEA TABLE OF THOMAS CHIPPENDALE INTEREST

CIRCA 1770   PROBABLY CANTON

Decorated in tones of gold on a black ground, the rectangular top with four circular gilt mons, and with a carved gilt pierced gallery above a decorated moulded edge, leading to a conforming moulded pierced frame, decorated with foliate scrolls, the apron pierced and with a scrolled pendant at the centre, on turned cabriole legs with claw and ball feet.

Provenance: There are two almost identical tables which were supplied by Thomas Chippendale senior and junior for the Gallery at Harewood House, West Yorkshire.

One of these is illustrated in situ on page 167 Thomas Chippendale by Christopher Gilbert. The table illustrated is currently on display in the Cinnamon Drawing Room at Harewood. The table illustrated does not have the top gallery as is present on our table. It is possible that the former has either been lost over time due to vulnerability.

An almost identical table sold at Sobethys (Property from the Estate of Brooke Astor Sale) in 2012 for $23,750.

Literature: The Life and Work of Thomas Chippendale by Christopher Gilbert distributed by Artlines  (UK) Ltd.
