For the Iberian market, after a fluted silver shape, painted in under-glaze blue, the back plate with the holy monogram ‘IHS’ incorporating a cross into the design, all within foliate scrollwork, terminating in a pendant knop.

The letters IHS with a crucifix above it were used as a symbol by the Society of Jesus, an order of Roman Catholic priests founded by St Ignatius of Loyola in 1534.

A fragment from a similar stoupe may be found in the Bangkok National Museum, Thailand, excavated in 1984, from San Petro, a Dominican church destroyed by the Burmese in 1767, at Ayutthaya, a former Portuguese settlement.
