In China the use of copper in glazes stretches back to the Tang dynasty. The copper pigment is fired in reduction to produce a red effect; if fired in an oxidised kiln the result is a green colour instead.
Although difficult to use due to the volatile nature of copper’s chemical composition, new glaze techniques were developed during the Qing dynasty to recreate the ‘xianhong’ fresh red glazes of the Ming.
