Chinese bronze figure of Guanyin.
A Gilt bronze statue of the Buddhist bodhisattva, Guanyin. Known as the Goddess of Mercy in English, she is associated with compassion and her Chinese name means ‘the one who perceives the Sounds of the World’. Holding a scroll and wearing a necklace associated with Chinese or Indian royalty incorporating a ‘ruyi’-head upon the chain, she stands serenely on bare feet. She is draped in an outer robe that shows evidence of a gilt, hand-painted cloud pattern, over an inner garment equally decorated with gilt flowers and leaves.
Chinese, 18th-19th century.
