Chinese 18th Century Famille Rose Judgment of Paris Plate.

Qianlong  - 1739-1795 - Famille Rose plate made at the kilns at Jingdezhen for export to Europe

The centre of the plate is painted in over glaze enamels to show a depiction of the mythological story where Paris a Shepherd and the mortal son of King Priam of Troy, was having to decide which of the Greek Goddesses - Athena, Hera and Aphrodite - was the most beautiful.  here the judgment is about to made as Paris has the Golden Apple in his hand which was the prize and Eros the God of Love had replaced Athena.  It is thought the painting was based on a picture by Rubens.

The cavetto of the plate is painted with four scenes from various ports thought to be those of the East India Company.
