Chinese 17th Century Blue and White Master of The Rocks Type Plate.

Kangxi 17th century blue and white porcelain large deep plate finely potted and excellent painting of the pattern known as 'Master of The Rocks' 聽.

Made At the kilns at Jingdezhen between 1662 and 1674 with fine decoration in vibrant cobalt blue 聽. The  plate 聽 is extremely well painted with stratigraphic 聽 mountains with pine trees, a skein of geese and a small figure in the pagoda on the promontory representing a Confucian scholar and a fishing boat 聽 in the river.

The cavetto is painted with a continuous scene of pine trees, landscape, figures, fishermen and retreats.

To the underside there are bamboo sprays to the underside of the rim and double circle with a square seal mark inside with the Buddhist Swatikas to the centre of the base.

Like all good master of the Rocks decorated pieces it is painted with a very good hand in bright cobalt blue with excellent detail.

Although the term 'Master of the Rocks' refers to a design that is in the Chinese taste it is not a term that is recognised as a known pattern in China but was thought to be coined by the collector and academic Gerald Reitlinger and refers to a distinct collection of designs centered around impressive mountains and rivers with the strata of the rock as part of the design and the designs were inspired by the Ming scrolls. The pattern is closely associated with the Transitional period or early Kangxi period up to c1674 The painting is in excellent cobalt 聽.
