A China Trade portrait of the clipper Columba, painted on a typically imposing scale by this fine maritime artist, Lai Fong of Calcutta in around 1870.

Oil on canvas, within a good wedge form frame veneered with a fine Asian hardwood.

The ship Columba was built at the yard of Messrs Walter Hood & Co., Footdee, and launched in 1865 under the command of Captain Richie. The yard was responsible for building many of the finest ships to be launched from Aberdeen including the famous clipper Thermopylae, rival to Cutty Sark in the Great Race of 1872. Launched as a clipper rigged ship for the west coast trade of South America, Columba was rigged as a barque from 1871. During the 1870's Columba was variously registered at Shanghai and Hong Kong.

This portrait was perhaps commissioned from Lai Fong on the last occasion that Columba sailed as a clipper.
