A Charles II Virginia walnut gateleg table Circa 1670

A Charles II Virginia walnut gateleg table, the ova top supported on a spirally turned base. This table retains its original hinges and bun feet.

This gateleg table is a form that was introduced in the mid 17th century and continued to be popular for at least 150 years. The timber used in its construction is Virginia walnut, which was occasionally imported from the colony from the late 16th century, but came into general use after the restoration of the monarchy. John Evelyn in his Silva  describes it as being the timber most suitable for furniture, being resistant to the worm (this is mostly true, although some sapwood on some pieces shows evidence of attack by worm). It was superseded in about 1720 with the introduction of mahogany, a harder denser timber.This gateleg dating from the first years of Charles II reign is obviously an early example standing on spirally turned legs and stretchers which of course were inspired by Solomonic columns. It is in very nice original condition, retaining its original hinges, and polish and use over 350 years have given it a wonderful golden patina. it does of course have odd marks and abrasions consistent with age.
