Extremely attractive CHARLES II oval tobacco box with a lovely patina.
Maker's mark only 'WB' - struck on the inside of the base and the inside of the lid.

The lid is engraved with a simple coat of arms and a closed helmet above mounted by an insignia of a full sun. The whole is surrounded by scrolling foliage.
This box was originally intended to be opened by squeezing the sides but the spring has failed over the years and the lid now opens by putting your nail underneath the base of the applied circular vessel and lifting. The original mechanism is still affixed to the inside of the lid.
This is a beautiful old box which has been masterfully engraved and holds very comfortably in the hand.
