English Oak Carved Panel, circa 1600.
It is carved with the Sacred Monogram, “IHS” which symbolises in anagram form letters from the Greek for Jesus Christ, also known as a “Christogram.”
It is carved to a very high standard, with deeply incised work surrounding the Monogram, and depicting Vine leaves and Grapes which would be recognised by people at that time as representing the blood of Christ through the wine drunk at the Last Supper.
