Carrara Marble Sculpture of Sophocles

Italy

Circa 1810

A handsome and well executed statuary marble figure, after the classical model, the ‘Lateran Sophocles’, found at Terracina in 1839, which was presented to Pope Gregory XVI and displayed in the Lateran Palace. The

figure was subsequently moved to its present location in the Museo Gregoriano-Profano in the Vatican. The ‘Lateran Sophocles’ is itself a Roman copy of a 4th Century BC Greek bronze original.

Sophocles is one of three ancient Greek tragedians whose plays have survived together with the earlier plays of Aeschylus and the later plays of Euripedes. His most famous tragedies, known as the Theban Plays, revolve around Oedipus and Antigone.
