o.s:18 3/8 ins x 22 1/2 ins sheet: 10 1/2 ins x 15 1/2 ins.

The Sadeler family were the largest, and probably the most successful of the dynasties of Flemish engravers of the 17th century. They were descended from "chasers," engravers of armour, from Aalst. Sadeler was the imperial artist to the Austrian Hapsburg court in the seventeenth century. He recorded many of the various rulers and noblemen who visited Emperor Rudolf II and engraved their portraits, usually in an emblematic oval surrounded by mythical symbols and intricate images of battle scenes, here a battle during the Thirty Years’ War, that served to heighten the sitter’s importance.
