Canton enamel box in the shape of a butterfly.
Qianlong period (1736 - 95).
Its body and outstretched wings decorated in bright colours with radiating and swirling patterns. The rim with scrolling green leafwork and flowerheads including orchid and peony.
In Chinese, the second character in butterfly, ‘die’ in ‘hudie’ is a homonym with the character for 80 years of age, thus the insect is symbolic of a long life.
