Canton China Trade trunk.
The leather covered camphor wood trunk with brass corner caps and brass nailed decoration including a swag to the front, to each sides a pair of cast brass carrying handles. The camphor wood interior bears a label for Ashoe to the lid, a prolific Cantonese maker of trunks with a workshop at 9 Carpenters’ Square in the first half of the 19th century. (See Carl Crossman - The Decorative Arts of the China Trade).
The trunk stands upon original turned feet, which are removable.
Canton, China, circa 1810 - 1830.
