Pier Jacopo Alari-Bonacolsi, the goldsmith-trained sculptor, who is always referred to nowadays by his nickname 'Antico' (which he had earned by 1479), was the greatest exponent during the Italian Renaissance of bronze statuettes that were derived from close observation of ancient Roman originals.
