Sailor's Woolwork
British Sailor's Woolwork of the Angola
Circa 1875
Textile
The colourful sailor's woolwork known as a woolie depicts a portside view of a fully-rigged three-masted underway on a rough sea. The wool is beautifully rendered in a folk art manner.
Surrounding the edge of the wool, around the edge of the frame, is a band of the signal flags forming a colourful surround.
The sailor has, most unusually, depicted a three-dimensional depiction of the ship and has used trapunto work for the sails.
The ship appears to be a freighter with no portholes visible. To the stern is the name Angola which is also found on a banner flying from the Mainmast. All within a maple frame.
