An unusual early 20th century vase by Pierre-Adrien Dalpayrat, with blue oxblood and eggplant glaze. Remnants of signature to base.
Pierre-Adrien Dalpayrat (1844-1910) was born in Limoges where he developed an early interest in painting and design. He attended the local art school followed by the Limoges Municipal School of Porcelain Painting, before going on to work in various manufactories between 1867 and 1888.
During this time he developed an aptitude for stoneware experimented with glazes. Dalpayrat produced a vast range of shapes and decorations and became particularly know his oxblood flambé pottery.
The "Dalpayrat red" was often used to describe his distinctive glazes. Perfected in 1892, it is dappled or veined with greens, blues and yellows, and appears on pieces in the form of gourds, fruits, and shapes derived from Japanese bottles.
