Inscribed and dated 1875 l.l., graphite, mounted but not framed
Artist and illustrator G. W. Maynard was born in Washington D.C. in 1843 and painted a mural in the Library of Congress entitled ‘In Strange Seas’. This graphite drawing is a mounted page taken from his 1875 sketchbook. It is a charming depiction of a late-nineteenth century black man wearing a top hat in Washington D.C., and a fine example of Maynard's observational skills.
