Inscribed and dated l.r.: Georgetown DC 1875
Artist and illustrator G. W. Maynard was born in Washington D.C. in 1843. His most known work is a mural in the Library of Congress entitled ‘In Strange Seas’. This graphite drawing of a black man in Georgetown is a fine example of his observational skills, taken from his 1875 sketchbook. This drawing is mounted in museum board but not framed.
