A mid 17th century salt-glazed stoneware bottle; a Bellarmine or Bartmannkrug circa 1650; Frechen, Germany.

Imported into London by Dutch shippers throughout the 17th century, by the end of that century bottles of a similar material were being successfully produced within the city as well as black glass bottles for wine and beer and clear glass decanters for the dining table.

The bearded face came to represent and lampoon either Cardinal Bellarmine or the Duke of Alba.
