A Chinese Famille Rose Cuspidor.
Of squat form, the eight sides alternately wide or narrow and indented, the bulbous body with “C” shaped handle and wide splayed rim, decorated on the rim and on each wide section with a brightly enamelled butterfly, each one different, with antennae and out-stretched wings delineated in minute detail, the butterflies interspersed with a scattering of flowering sprays, the underside of the rim with further flowering sprays, all different and all brightly enamelled, the footring with a band of finely etched iron red flowerheads with, on each corner, an iron red blossom, the handle decorated with an iron red bud on a leafy stem, the footrim unglazed, the base glazed.
