Fine quality late 18th Century inlaid Cuban mahogany Stick Barometer, the form typical of the maker, with lancet top over impressively engraved signed silvered brass register plate, embellished with trailing leaf and flower head decoration; the trunk, of solid Cuban mahogany, with exposed barometer tube terminating in oval cistern cover, inset with stylised fan cartouche.
One of the foremost of Scottish Barometer makers, Knie emigrated from Southern Germany to Edinburgh and worked from 1776-1817 at various premises, especially in the Lawnmarket area.
