Large Striking Baktiar Carpet.

6.76 x 4.62 metres.

Baktiar carpets, woven in Northwest Persia, are well known as among the most distinct, and thus highly sought after, Persian weavings, thanks to their unique combination of the playful, geometric designs of nomadic and tribal rugs, and the scale and high-quality craftsmanship one would expect of a Persian workshop piece.

This handsome early 20th Century example boasts a charming all-over design, rather than the conventional central medallion motif, with grand scale panels creatively repeated across the field in a wide variety of designs in earthy vegetable-dyed colours, including tones of cornflower blue, warm terracotta, camel and indigo, all framed by a wide, ivory border. Being an earlier piece, it also showcases a high-grade weave in lustrous wool, lending a crisp clarity to the design – given the unusually large size, this carpet was likely originally made as a special commission for a person of note.

Retained in very good condition for everyday use, with its borders preserved on all sides, with a mild but characterful age-related patina.

A handsome tribal carpet, with an expressive design and a rare and impressively large format, to suit a wide variety of interiors.
