An exquisite mid 19th Century Aubusson tapestry rug in excellent original condition.  Preserved on a silk linen backing, this rare circa 1850-1860 Aubusson also has velcro sewn onto the backing where it has been hung on a wall for many years.  Hence preserving the beauty and condition of this early tapestry rug from France.  The dyes from this period are extremely muted due to the pieces age, we have noticed some subtle elements of silk used in the white flowers too which is rather interesting.  A very classical French drawing on this well proportioned tapestry.  In wonderful preserved condition and it could be used on the floor in a low traffic area such as bedroom, or hung on a wall.

The Aubusson tapestry manufacture of the 17th and 18th centuries managed to compete with the royal manufacture of Gobelins Tapestry and the privileged position of Beauvais tapestry.  Aubusson carpets were produced in the upper valley of the Creuse in central France, they may have developed from looms in isolated family workshops established by Flemings that are noted in documents from the 16th century.

Typically, Aubusson tapestries depended on engravings as a design source or the full-scale cartoons from which the low-warp tapestry-weavers worked. As with Flemish and Parisian tapestries of the same time, figures were set against a conventional background of verdure, stylized foliage and vignettes of plants on which birds perch and from which issue glimpses of towers and towns.

Please request a home visit to view this beautiful classical french Aubusson tapestry in-situ. We travel all over the UK showing our inventory of carpets and rugs to interior designers and private customers.
