An arts and crafts enamel plaque: “Summer Fairy”.

This small enamel on copper plaque oozes charm, depicting a fairy straddling a small mound or stone, possibly a mole hill. Asides its aesthetic, I was also drawn to the back of the frame, which contains full information on its provenance. See images.

The enameller is a Mrs Dorothy Miller (1893-1987) from Camberwell.   Dorothy was born to a South London headmaster, with maiden name Hollom. She exhibited at the 1916 Arts and Crafts Society Exhibition. In 1918 she married Guy Miller, an artist and stained glass specialist.  Dorothy Miller exhibited at the 1923 Arts and Crafts Society Exhibition. Exhibit 610 a design for stained glass and 665, an enamel plaque (St George). In its day this plaque was expensive at £5 5 shillings.

Interestingly a watercolour design for stained glass by Miller recently sold at auction (Hansons). See link and images.  I suspect this was the exhibit from 1923 ACES.

Condition of the enamel is excellent and original. Do take note of the plaque’s size – it is small and priced accordingly.
