An Art Deco diamond Naval crown brooch in its original fitted box.
This wonderful large diamond set Naval crown sweetheart brooch is fronted in platinum with a gold reverse typical of the Edwardian era. The sails are set with old-cut diamonds with rose cut diamonds accenting the remainder of the brooch.
A fabulous diamond Naval brooch like this would have been made by a jeweller such as Goldsmiths and Silversmiths for Gieves of London who are well known military outfitters.
It would have been made specifically for a senior Naval officer to give as a gift to a loved one to signifiy that the giver was in the Navy and to promote partiotism.
Sweetheart brooches have been popular since the early 20th century and were given to wives, mothers and girlfriends by servicemen as mementos and reminders of the absent loved one. They were worn to show pride in having a sweetheart who was serving his country. They were made for every budget from base metal to platinum and designs were made for every aspect of the military.
