Exceptional Diminutive Bonnet Top Armoire.
With Serpentine Front and Moulded Twin Panelled Doors.
Sold Well Figured and Richly Patinated Chestnut.
French, Provincial, circa 1760.
Dimensions
187.89cms high x 126.95cms wide x 47.6cms deepCondition report
Of delightful diminutive proportions and designed in a provincial Rococo style, this vernacular armoire is in excellent overall condition. The graphic "bonnet top" cornice is heavily moulded and has generous rounded corners, above a serpentine fronted body with twin opening panel doors. Fashioned from finely figured chestnut, this unusually shallow cupboard is raised on turned bun feet and has stylised scroll details to the corners and to the front. One of the three interior shelves is original, the top and bottom ones are later estate replacements, and the piece retains its original hardware, including working lock and key. It is in genuine original "country house" condition throughout, bearing scars and bruises commensurate with its age and an untouched original surface. There is no evidence of any significant damage or restoration, and it is in fully functional condition.Stock number
