Antique Uzbek Silk Ikat Robe.
Silk Ikat Chapan , Bokhara, circa. 1900. This robe is quilted and was worn as the outer layer over a number of layers of clothing. The richness of the material - the warp-faced weave is made of a silk warp and a cotton weft and was very time-consuming and costly to produce - denoted the wealth and high social standing of its wearer. Like most Ikat robes, this Chapan is lined with Russian printed cotton which is attached to the robe with a bias-cut band of striped fabric often called bekasab. In order to avoid wasting the precious material, Chapans were usually made of straight lengths of Ikat in one loom-width, with only a few trapezoidal panels sewn on to add volume.
