An Extremely Rare Antique Silver Eighteenth Century Cutlery Flatware Service Perhaps Unique 1778-80 London.
Extremely Rare Eighteenth Century Feather Edge and Cartouche Carrington Shield Pattern.
Probably one of the oldest decorative patterns in existence
All engraved with a family crest .Eighteenth century complete flatware services are reasonably rare but to find a patterned one at this date all with the same original family crest is incredibly rare - the set also happens to be in excellent condition. This pattern is illustrated in Ian Pickfords flatware book. All the pieces are what is known as bottom mark - it is only the year later in 1781 when the marks are moved up the stem away from the bowls and tines.Described by Pickford as Feather Edge and Cartouche Pattern a very similar pattern was called Carrington shield in Nineteenth century pattern books.
