This beautiful antique Malayer runner is unusual being more than 5m long.  At some stage there has been a minor border removed from both sides along the full length of the piece - most probably a previous owner had width restrictions and having fallen in love with the runner decided to reduce the width so it fitted in the space available.  The repair has been very well done indeed and to the casual observer it is not in any way apparent.

At one end the original kelim end is fully intact, and all the selvedges (although narrowed as explained above) are completely original and all in place.  The design has one medallion, typical for this type of semi-tribal weaving, being off centre.  The rest of the field is filled with a repeating palmette and vine design.  Lovely soft blues sitting on a darker Indigo blue field.

Malayer is a large village located between the major weaving areas of Hamadan and Sarouk in Northwest Persia. In Malayer and the small villages surrounding it, production was almost exclusively small antique rugs and runners made by individual weavers in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
