An enormous antique Malayer corridor carpet otherwise known as a Kelleh carpet which means long format. Dating from the early 20th century the natural dyes are vibrant yet have faded due to their age.  A rich red border of floral leaf designs.  The large main field design is a symmetrical geometric pattern of flowers and connecting vines.  Woven on a deep indigo background the variety of colours used for the pattern really lift the whole carpets palette.  These large corridor carpets were more-often commissioned for the West during the mid 19th century to early 20th century for stately homes.

Malayer is a large village located between the major weaving areas of Hamadan and Sarouk in Northwest Persia. In Malayer and the small villages surrounding it, production was almost exclusively small antique rugs and runners made by individual weavers in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

We source beautiful antique carpets, rugs and runners from all over the world for customers and interior designers. Visit our barn showroom in Crondall, Surrey by appointment, we are about an hours drive from London.  We also love travelling all over the UK showing carpets, rugs and runners in situ so please request a home visit or email us for further help.

Condition report

This carpet has been in a private home for much of its life and used.  We have just thoroughly washed the carpet all by hand and there is minimal wear showing.  In general the pile height is excellent throughout, it could be improved marginally in one small area if requested.  The fringes are original and most of the selvedges or side-cords are too.  A wonderful long Kelleh carpet ideal for an entrance hall, narrow corridor or even under a dining table it would look quite spectacular.
