Antique Kazak Runner.
2.80 x 0.97 metres.
The Caucasus have a rich history of rug weaving, stretching back several centuries. The region stands at the crossroads of various cultures, and its carpets reflect this in their creativity and diversity. As such, these pieces are highly sought-after, well-known for their wide range of bold, graphic tribal designs and dynamic use of vegetable-dyed colours.
This c. 1900s example employs a subtle saffron colour field, which serves as a charming backdrop to the array of earthy organic-dyed colours used in its design – a spacious, allover pattern in tones of ochre, cornflower blue and ivory, framed by four individual borders.
Retained in very good practical condition for everyday use, this antique Kazak Runner preserves its borders and short fringes on all sides, although has had some minor age-related restoration, done to a hight standard. Its vegetable-dyed colours have taken on a charming patina over the years.
A sophisticated tribal example, to lend personality and charisma to any setting.
