A superb rare pair of George II silver tea caddies with the original matching sugar bowl and cover made by the specialist tea caddy maker Samuel Taylor in London in1747. These are beautiful in the hand and in excellent condition. The fully hallmarked bases slide off so the precious tea can be inserted and the lids of each of the tea caddies can be removed. One of the caddies would have been used for green tea and the other for black tea. The sugar bowl is marked underneath and on the lid. Sugar was also precious at this date. The finials of the tea caddies and the cover of the sugar bowl have an attractive flower motif - a gorgeous set.
The crest is that of Maitland. ( Earl of Lauderdale ) James Maitland 7th Earl of Lauderdale was one of sixteen Scottish peers to be represented in the British parliament in 1747.
