Antique Chinese Saddle Rug.
This Chinese Baotou-Suiyuan saddle rug dates to the late 19th century. As is the custom with these saddle rugs, it is made in two pieces, with the edges reinforced by red Tibetan tie-dyed woollen cloth. The border decoration contains Buddhist symbols such as the conch shell, the wheel and the lotus flower, and objects symbolising accomplishment: books, paintings and a chess board.
Wool on a cotton foundation, excellent condition.
